As they say, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But for most of us, breakfast is also the most neglected meal of the day. We are just too lazy to get up early in the morning to make our ‘tiffins’. Also, Indian breakfasts take crazy amounts of time to prepare. Even for a simple Masala dosa a lot of processing needs to be done. You need to get your batter ready the previous evening and if you do not have a grinder at home, you need to get it done at a near by grinder-store. Then get potatoes and onions to make masala aloo curry which of couse is not enough. So we have to scramble some fresh coconuts to make the Chutney. And if some do not like it or fancy a full Dosa experience, they have to make Sambar which in itself takes a lot of time and effort. Oh gosh, even writing about the whole process, makes me tired.
Breakfast needs to be easy to make and quick to eat. Western countries have it easy with their breakfast. For example, the staple food of Americans for Nastha is having cereal and cornflakes with milk. Though Indian markets also sell these type of breakfast food, it hasn’t really caught the fascination of Indians. The main reason I could extrapolate for this is that, we love our masala, onions and chutneys. We cannot think of our morning breakfast fix without these quintessentially Indian food items in them. A simple bowl of cereal with milk is considered as either baby food or something you eat when you are a patient and the doctor advice you to lay off spices for a while.
Kellogg’s has now invented a solution to address this problem, where the breakfast preparation time could be reduced but the prepared breakfast is still Indian by nature and taste. Kellogg’s India has started a campaign called ‘Kellogg’s Waale Guptaji Ki Family ka Nashta’ through which they are trying to make their cornflakes, oats and their other offerings, a part of the typical Indian family’s breakfast. They have created these great recipes having cornflakes, oats etc as the main ingredient and using other items creatively to make them taste Indian. For example, they have created a delicious recipe called Cheesy Cornflakes. It is very easy and fun to make. Take a bowl of corn flakes, sprinkle one finely chopped tomato and one chopped onion on top of the corn in the bowl. On top of them add chopped coriander for smell and colour. Finally, add two table spoons of Nacho cheese sauce in to the mix. Now take the bowl as a whole and microwave it for 1 minute. Tada! your beautiful looking, Indian tasting and healthy Cheesy Cornflakes is ready to for you to gorge on.
This breakfast can be made in 5-10 minutes. And it has delicious Indian flavours. On top of everything, it is also very healthy first meal of the day, as corn has very low fat. Kellogg’s has many such wonderful, easy to make and delicious to eat recipes on their website. They have a very wide range of creative recipes including, cutlets, Muffins, Chaat, Shakes and even deserts like Choco balls etc.
Now I have one less reason to not have my breakfast!
